History

Cary’s wrestling history is long and victorious. In one word, I would say they are triumphant. The wrestling team at CHS has always been good, and they have won many matches throughout the years. In 2022, they were still going strong, ranking 25th out of 106 schools in their division! Since the next wrestling season is just around the corner, let’s look back on their history.

From 1981 to 2010 the team won 19 state championships (11 state tournaments and 8 dual team state titles), 21 regional championships, and 28 consecutive conference tournament championships. During this time the team was led by coach Jerry Winterton.

During Winterton’s career he had a 97.5 win percentage, which includes the 4 years at East Wake high school, where he started coaching.

According to the national high school hall of fame, “Winterton was selected North Carolina Wrestling Coach of the Year 10 times and National Coach of the Year twice, and he was named to the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.” He was the leading figure in the wrestling team’s success throughout the years.

Upcoming

This year, tryouts will be held on October 30 after school. Girls are also welcome to come and try out, the team can always use some more lady imps! Tryouts are open to everyone, so if you’re planning on trying out, it’s about time to prepare.

Being in a good team environment can be really rewarding,  creating memories that you will share for the rest of your life.

So, come join the team, and remind yourself, “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky
